Case Study Update – August Summary

My last day of work was August 15th and I knew it was coming for 2 weeks. (I was laid off if you missed it.) So, I got my ass in gear starting on August 1st.

It is amazing what you can do when you focus and have limited distractions.

I started on a few critical things related to this niche site case study:

  • Reviewed the keywords, especially the long tails. Lewis (Cloud Income) helped out there so check out his KW Research Guide, and Quinton (Cubicle Houdini) told me about a couple great ways to find keywords that I didn’t think about.
  • Reviewed the link building process and where it was. I am looking at it as a 6 step process where you iterate over and over. Plus, I have been really into guest posting lately – pure outreach, like Perrin (Niche Pursuits). Perrin is ramping up his own site ($1,700 revenue last month!) In addition, I bought a Platinum HOTH Package to get things rolling. I actually linked up to a couple specific posts in a few Private Blog Network domains.
  • Audited the on page SEO, and I asked for help from my Mastermind Group. You can develop a blind spot to your own work…It is really easy to do. I enlisted the help of some smart people who are really crushing it. I got some great feedback on 2 pages, then made changes to all the other pages based on that feedback. I made some bone headed mistakes – SEO 101 kind-of-stuff. The targeted KW may not have been mentioned in the meta description. D’oh!! After I made the changes, I re-indexed the pages in Webmaster Tools, or the Search Console.<!–more–>
A quick note on PBNs – I often get questions about what networks are good to work with, and for a while I didn’t have an answer. Last week, Rank Source relaunched. Check them out here. That’s not an affiliate link. If you’re interested in some powerful backlinks, I would talk to Lewis at Rank Source. He is also offering a done for you service – That’s what I would personally look at.

Generally, everything is UP. Great! I was hoping to have more in the top 5, or even the top ten.

But I need more links to certain pages to make that happen. Here are some of the rankings, grouped by topic…

I already saw some movement after getting the HOTH package. They finished up on the Top Level links and will be drip feeding the Volume package over the next few weeks. Rob commented the other week about how the big movement comes a few weeks after the HOTH Team says they are finished.

I moved this site to it’s own Google Analytics account so I lost the history of traffic. You can see the traffic has been fairly even at about 50+ sessions per day.

The bounce rate is a little higher than I want and I am working on that. It would be great to have the bounce rate under 70%, but just getting it under 80% will be a great start.

You will see in the graph below that I was able to get under 80% for a few consecutive days. I need the trend to continue and obviously, that shows Google that visitors are enjoying the website more.

In June and July, the site only made a few bucks. It was pretty weak.

But we did okay in August!august-amazon-earnings

I think building a niche website is a great and approachable way to get started making money online. This month it is $28 and who knows how much over November and December.

After getting laid off, I have a renewed interest and focus on this niche site. I am looking at my outreach campaign for more guest posting, and more likely, guestographics. I need to get traction on more links and more traffic. You can see from the charts above that there is a positive trend in the rankings.

My number one goal is to get more links to the right pages.

What do you think? Do you have any tips, comments, questions, or anything?

  • Have you try using PBN?

    • Hey Joseph – Yes, I have a very small number of PBN links right now. I am going to keep them limited on this site to limit the risk.

I am planning an getting a LOT of guest posts in the next couple weeks to help the rankings. You can get guest post backlinks at a faster velocity than PBN links without being suspicious.

        Hey Doug,
Great to hear that your niche site is doing well. however I have one pertinent question which i am asking you here-
As far as i know there are 2 methods to brand your website
        1. with your personal branding and personal social profiles
        2. Static type of website with any face and personalisation
As far as i understand you are keeping your niche site private and without your personal branding So my question are

        • Hey Ray,
          Thanks for the comment.

I am simply sending emails with my domain email address. I haven’t had any major issues with someone asking about proving my identity. Does that answer your question?

I have a simple about page and a twitter profile for the site too. I am not big on social media so I don’t spend much time there.

I think I see what you were getting at, but if not, feel free to ask more questions.

            Thanks for your reply.

  • Doug,

Maybe, next time you can tell us how you managed to lower the bounce rate? I am struggling on this area big time.

  • How much do you invest in this site?

  • Hey, thanks for your detailed post.
I want to know which program/software you are using to track the keywords as you shown in the screenshot.

I’m using SEMrush, I just want to know which one you are using.

    Hey Doug,
    Thanks for the update.
However, can you share the name of the tool that you use to track the ranking of your site?

  • Stephanie

    Hi Doug,

Great info as always. Quick question: how many articles do you have so far on this site? Just curious. Keep up the good work!

    • Hey Stephanie, Thanks! I appreciate it.

I have about 50 or so posts and pages. I have been torn about adding more content lately, mainly for the very low competition KWs. There is only so much time in the day so I have been focusing on guest posting to get more links over adding more content.

  • I am not sure why you are worried about the bounce rate Doug, it’s an affiliate site with the sole purpose of getting people to click through to Amazon.

Instead of looking at the bounce rate, what I do is look at the average time on site, for all organic activity and broken down by page and I then look at clicks to Amazon by page – this is the gold.
