My general keyword research philosophy is to target low competition keywords. It’s not original, but I developed my own data-driven approach called the Keyword Golden Ratio (KGR). It works extremely well. The KGR is original.
The tricky part is that you need to target keywords with a search volume under 250.
Most people want to go after larger search volumes since they should be more profitable since there are literally more people looking for information about the keyword and topic.
The search volume is only one piece of the puzzle. I’ve found the higher search volumes not only have more competition, but it also takes longer for the keywords to rank than lower search volume keywords.
I haven’t tested it, but I believe Google has a longer sandbox period for higher search volumes. I hear this from my peers and students as well.
Yes, go for that keyword!
There’s no harm in targeting a higher search volume and competition keyword. Just be sure you have plenty of content targeting long tail, keyword golden ratio keywords, too. If you have the KGR terms, then you’ll be able to get traffic sooner which will be a great small win. Those early wins are really important to keep you motivated.
